Liv-ex uses independent, transaction-based Mid Prices. Its Fine Wine 100 tracks 100 sought-after wines; a compact Knight Frank long-run reference lower on the page remains a separate category series.

A buyer’s framework

A label is not the whole asset.

The bottle, case, storage history and ownership route all sit between an index print and a buyer’s actual outcome.

01

Wine & vintage

Confirm the exact producer, cuvée, vintage, format and case configuration. Regional indices can conceal substantial dispersion.

02

Provenance

Trace acquisition history and movement. Long, unexplained gaps weaken confidence even when the label is desirable.

03

Storage

Review temperature-controlled storage records, location and insurance. Heat, light and movement can affect condition and saleability.

04

Physical condition

Inspect fill levels, capsules, labels, cork risk and the original case rather than treating all bottles of a vintage as identical.

05

All-in cost

Include storage, insurance, transport, merchant spread, tax status and eventual selling fees before judging a quoted change.

06

Route out

Exchange liquidity, merchant bids and auction demand vary by wine and market cycle. A published index is not an instant exit price.

Keep the distinction visible

Category history is not an item-level forecast.

These public measures describe selected index baskets or market segments. They do not establish the value, liquidity, costs or future selling price of any particular item.
