Classic cars · category context

Classic cars, model by model.

The ten-year category increase is real historic context, but the current market is selective. Segment indices show why originality, condition and model-specific demand still decide the outcome.

A buyer’s framework

The car is the evidence.

Model-level supply, originality and the cost of keeping a car correct can matter more than a broad collector-car headline.

01

Identity & specification

Verify chassis, engine, body and build specification. Matching components and factory records can materially affect buyer confidence.

02

Originality

Distinguish preserved, restored and modified examples. A costly restoration does not automatically produce a more valuable car.

03

Condition

Commission mechanical, structural and bodywork inspection. Photographs and auction descriptions are not substitutes for examination.

04

Cost to hold

Budget for maintenance, recommissioning, storage, insurance, transport and specialist parts—not only the acquisition price.

05

History file

Ownership, competition, restoration and service records should form a coherent file that can be transferred at sale.

06

Route out

Auction, specialist dealer and private-sale routes produce different timing, fees and certainty. Assess likely net proceeds, not advertised prices.
